Will was born and raised in West Philadelphia by his mother Caroline Smith and father Willard Christopher Smith Sr. Smith's parents separated when he was only 13 but didn't officially divorce until he was 30. Will was raised Baptist and up to today he still is. Even though Smith had no intention to go to college he was accepted with a full scholarship to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) without even applying but he turned the offer down. Smith believes it's because he had “high SAT scores plus the school needed more black kids".

Later on in life Will began to MC of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, with his childhood friend Jeffrey "DJ Jazzy Jeff" Townes as turntablist and producer as well as Ready Rock C (Clarence Holmes) as the human beat box. They gained critical acclaim for winning the first ever Grammy in the Rap category (1988). He had a line in "Voices That Care", a 1991 Gulf War song by a celebrity group. Smith spent money freely during his early career and underpaid his income taxes. The Internal Revenue Service eventually assessed a $2.8 million tax debt against Smith, took many of his possessions, and garnished his income. Smith was nearly bankrupt in 1990 when the NBC television network signed him to a contract and built a sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, around him. The show was successful and began his acting career. Smith set for himself the goal of becoming "the biggest movie star in the world," studying box office successes' common characteristics.

Will Smith happened to have the starting role of the American television sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, created by Andy Borowitz and Susan Borowitz. This happened to first air September 10, 1990. In Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Will Smith played a “fictionalized” version of himself, a teenager from West Philadelphia who is sent to move in with his aunt and uncle in wealthy Bel-Air in their mansion, where he experimented with his lifestyle in different ways. He often had many altercations with some of his relatives, such as Uncle Phil (James Avery). You can pretty much say Will Smith played a street smart character.

Tons of people enjoy the Theme Song of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which basically was the opening sequence explaining the context of the show.
  • These are the Lyrics to the theme song Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air (Theme Song) lyrics

Now this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute just sit right there
And tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air

[verse 2]
In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground is where I spent most of my days
Chillin out, maxin, relaxing all cool,
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one lil fight and my mom got scared
And said "You're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air"
I Begged and pleaded with her day after day,
But she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way
She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket
I put my walkman on and said I might as well kick it
[verse 3]
First class yo this is bad
Drinking orange juice out of a champaine glass
Is this what the people of Bel-Air living like?
Hmm this might be allright
But wait I hear prissy, bourgeois and all that
Is this the type of place they should send this cool cat
I don't think so, I'll see when I get there
I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air
[verse 4]
Well ah the plain landed and when I came out
There was a dude that looked like a cop standing there with my name
out
I aint trying to get arrested yet I just got here
I sprang with the quickness like lightning dissapeared
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said FRESH and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab was rare
But I thought naw forget it yo homes to Bel-Air
[verse 5]
I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the cabby "Yo homes smell ya later"
I looked at my kingdom I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

The sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air had 148 episodes that were produced over six seasons, ended May 20, 1996.
